Jeremy Brett was a homosexual who left his sham marriage with Anna Massey for a succession of men, including Gary Bond.

Jealous of some two-bit TV actor from the 1980s who chain smoked, drank and drugged himself to death at 61? Nah. Rathbone was far better in every way, ps he was VERY homophobic as well.

Jeremy Bret was a brilliant, deep, sensitive, flamboyant, fair, bighearted man with a lot of goods and virtues but…he was also beautiful as no one else!
His stunning beauty and the perfectness of his appearance balanced his excellence and politeness and inteseness on stage, on screen and in true life.
He made Sherlock Holmes alive, not as a simple character from a book, but as a true person.
He respected other actors who performed SH before: so sad to see rough and vulgar comments about him!

He made some unfavourable remarks about Nigel Bruce actually.

Aside from being too obviously gay, Brett did not resemble Sherlock Holmes and he was too old and fat in the third and fourth series. Basil rathbone will always be the best.

Brett wasn’t a homosexual….supposedly bisexual however, but even if he was, what on Earth has that got to do with him being a good Holmes or not?, to me and to many, many people he is the definitive, have you heard how he loved his dear “Joaney”? the adoration he felt for that woman was one of deep, heart felt love no two ways about it, you only need to hear how devastated he was by her tragic death to understand it

Whether you like it or not, irrespective of Brett’s sexuality, his portrayal will always been seen as the definitive.
also you say Brett did not resemble Holmes in the 3rd and 4th seasons (which is odd that you are aware of the particular seasons, what with you seemingly disliking him so much)that is true, but they didn’t plan it that way, I mean I’d like to see you taking on such a deep character when you’re in ill health, mentally and physically.

Rathbone’s films are far more entertaining, it doesn’t get any better than an hilarious Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson, Henry Daniell as Professor Moriarty, and of course Denis Hoey as Inspector Lestrade. Brett on the other hand was too colourless and dull.

this is a PERFECT example of people just not understanding Brett as a person, chalking it all down to him going “mad” or in your case, being gay (which has yet to be proven I think) and so what? what if he was gay? he still provided the best portrayal of Holmes I frankly think we’ll ever see, I mean read this quote from his obit from the New York Times
